The same AI tool can give a weak answer to one person and an excellent answer to another. Often the difference is not the tool but the request. Writing a good request for an AI is called prompt engineering, and it needs no programming at all.
Start with the four parts of a useful prompt. The first is : who you are, who the reader is, and why you need the answer. The second is a clear , such as summarize, compare or write a reply. The third is the shape of the output, for example three bullet points, a table or an email of under 150 words. The last is limits, such as using plain English or not mentioning prices.
Compare two requests. “Write about our new app” leaves the AI to guess almost everything. “You are writing to small shop owners who have never used our app. In under 100 words, explain how it saves them time, and end with one question” gives it what it needs. The second prompt is longer, but you will rewrite the result far less.
Examples help too. If you want answers in a fixed style, show the AI one or two first. This is called few-shot prompting. Asking with no examples at all is called zero-shot. A few good samples are often the fastest way to get the and you want.
You can also give the AI a role, such as an experienced marketing manager or a careful editor. A role does not add knowledge, but it changes which words and points the AI puts first. For harder problems, ask it to work through the problem step by step before it gives a final answer. Laying out the steps tends to improve answers that numbers or several conditions.
Treat the first answer as the start of a . Tell the AI what to keep and what to change, just as you would with a colleague. Save prompts that work well and them. It is also worth adding one more line to important prompts: “If you do not know, say so.” That small sentence makes the AI less likely to invent an answer.
Finally, remember what prompts cannot do. An AI may not know about recent events or your company’s data unless you give them to it. A person still has to read the result before it goes to a customer or into a decision.
