Visitors to Seoul often ask where they can see old Korea. A good answer is the palaces. Five royal palaces from the Joseon still stand in the middle of the city, and two of them tell the story of Seoul better than any museum.

The first is Gyeongbokgung. It was built in 1395, a few years after King Taejo founded Joseon. It was the main palace, and its name and the names of its halls were chosen by Jeong Do-jeon, the scholar who planned much of the new state. The palace lies in a straight line behind its main gate, Gwanghwamun, with mountains rising behind it. Inside, the hall Geunjeongjeon is where kings met their officials. Gyeonghoeru, a large over a pond, was used for royal .

Gyeongbokgung has not had an easy life. It burned during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s and lay in for more than two hundred and fifty years. It was rebuilt in the 1860s, but under Japanese rule most of its halls were torn down, and a government building was put up in front of it. Work to the palace has gone on since the 1990s, and it is still not finished.

The second palace is Changdeokgung. King Taejong founded it in 1405 as a second palace, but it became more important than the first. After the war in the 1590s, it was the first palace to be rebuilt, and for about two hundred and fifty years it was where the kings actually lived and worked.

Changdeokgung is very different from Gyeongbokgung. Instead of standing in straight lines, its buildings follow the shape of the hills. Behind them lies Huwon, the “rear garden,” with a square pond, small pavilions and old trees. Because its buildings sit so well with the land around them, UNESCO added Changdeokgung to its World List in 1997. It is the only one of the five palaces on that list.

If you are taking a guest around, the two palaces make a good pair. Gyeongbokgung shows the order and power that a new kingdom wanted to . Changdeokgung shows a quieter idea, that a home should fit the land it sits on. Each palace is closed one day a week, so check before you go. Tickets are cheap, and the garden at Changdeokgung can only be seen on a guided tour.
