Korea has few natural , yet it is one of the world’s leading makers of steel, ships, cars and memory chips. When foreign partners ask how that happened, the short answer is that the country moved from one industry to the next, each time a little higher in value.
In the 1960s, Korea’s factories made simple goods such as wigs, plywood and clothing. Labor was cheap, and these products could be made without much . In the 1970s, the government and a few large companies turned to heavy industry: steel, shipbuilding and chemicals.
Steel came first. POSCO, then called Pohang Iron and Steel, was founded in 1968. Much of the money came from the payments Japan made under the 1965 that restored relations between the two countries. Building started in 1970 on a sandy stretch of coast at Pohang. In June 1973, the first blast furnace produced its first iron. All of the iron ore and coal had to be shipped in from abroad, mostly from Australia and Brazil. That first furnace kept working for more than forty-eight years before it was shut down in 2021.
Cheap local steel made other industries possible. In 1972, Hyundai began building a in Ulsan, on the southeast coast. Nearby, its car plant started of the Pony in 1975, the first car of Korea’s own design. In 1986, Hyundai shipped a small car called the Excel to the United States, and more than 160,000 were sold in the first year. Today the Ulsan car plant can make about 6,000 cars a day, and ships leave from its own dock for more than two hundred countries.
The next step was electronics. Samsung, which had started as a small trading company in 1938, bought a company called Korea Semiconductor in 1974. In 1983, its founder announced a huge in memory chips, a bold bet at the time. Within about ten years, Samsung had become one of the world’s biggest makers of memory chips. Another Korean , SK hynix, grew out of Hyundai Electronics, which was also founded in 1983.
Each depended on the one before it. Steel fed the shipyards and car plants, and the money earned from ships and cars helped pay for chip factories. When you explain Korea’s economy to a visitor, this chain is often more useful than a list of company names. It shows that Korea’s growth came from planning, learning from others and taking large risks at the right time.
